Schuler Presents THE STEEL BAR to Pittsburgh ACC

Ron Schuler recently gave a presentation on “The Steel Bar: ‘In-House Lawyers’ in Pittsburgh – History and Ethics,” with special guest Jerry Richey, general counsel of the University of Pittsburgh, to the Pittsburgh chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel.

Ron Schuler spoke on the local war behind the scenes of the landmark NLRB v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Supreme Court case (1937) at the ACBA Federal Court Section Spring Reception, on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at the  William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh.

George Westinghouse: A Genius Devises His Legal Engine

On April 18, 2012, Ron Schuler delivered the keynote speech to the annual dinner meeting of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association, at the Fairmont Pittsburgh, on George Westinghouse and the development of his legal team.  Schuler specifically focused on Westinghouse's "hands-on" approach to forming his team of legal advisors with strengths in a variety of distinct disciplines, both inside his company and out, in Pittsburgh (his headquarters) and in New York (the financial capital) and abroad.  In doing so, Schuler noted, "Westinghouse provides us with the best, earliest example in Pittsburgh legal history of some of the key defining characteristics of the modern corporate legal team – a  comprehensive, integrated organization, dedicated to particular lines of enterprise in the service of Westinghouse’s legal needs."

On March 28, 2012, Ron Schuler moderated and presented at the University of Pittsburgh Law Review conference, "The Steel Bar: Pittsburgh Lawyers Forging America from the Frontier to the Future."

Schuler Contributes Baseball Bios to SABR BIO Project

Two of Ron Schuler's biographies of old-time baseball players - Pearce "What's the Use" Chiles and Pembroke Finlayson - were posted on the Bio Project site of the Society of American Baseball Research on July 29, 2013.

 

Natural Gas in Pittsburgh -- Deja Vu All Over Again?

I was reading an article from the New York Times the other day, and the first line of the article was, "Natural Gas is King in Pittsburgh.'

 

The article described how much natural gas development is under way in the region; that with respect to overall enterprise cost, “gas is far cheaper as fuel than coal,” especially for manufacturing; that it is reinvigorating the economy of Pittsburgh, and attracting capital to the region; and finally, that natural gas is a clean fuel.

The date of this article was October 18, 1885.

 

Schuler Speaks at Bradford House/W&J Symposium

On March 31, 2012, along with Dean Malissa, the official George Washington portrayer at Mt. Vernon, and Bill Barker, the official Thomas Jefferson portrayer at Colonial Williamsburg, Ron Schuler spoke at the Fourth Symposium on Life and Customs of Western Pennsylvania, co-sponsored by the David Bradford House and Washington & Jefferson University.  Schuler's topic was   “Whiskey, Guns & Lawyers: The Tumultuous Beginnings of the Legal Profession in Western Pennsylvania.”

103 Year-Old Pittsburgh Lawyer Reflects on Career

Reuben Fingold, a 103 year-old Shadyside resident who was admitted to the Allegheny County Bar in 1930 and joined the Allegheny County Bar Association in 1933, was honored by the Board of Governors of the ACBA on June 2, 2010 for achieving the status of the oldest member of our bar, and for “his Seventy Six years of service to the Allegheny County Bar Association and the legal community."
